Brown, Torretta among college football Hall of Fame inductees

A total of 16 players and two coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) were selected for this year’s Hall of Fame class.

Joining Brown and Torretta for enshrinement will be New Mexico State running back Pervis Atkins, Arizona defensive back Chuck Cecil, Auburn fullback Ed Dyas, West Virginia quarterback Major Harris, Brigham Young tight end Gordon Hudson, Harvard center William Lewis, Alabama linebacker Woodrow Lowe, Stanford wide receiver Ken Margerum, Texas defensive tackle Steve McMichael, Ohio State linebacker Chris Spielman, Iowa linebacker Larry Station, Georgia Tech defensive end Pat Swilling, Penn State running back Curt Warner, Nebraska defensive end Grant Wistrom, and coaches Dick MacPherson and John Robinson.

Penn State’s Bowman given extra year of probation

According to the Centre Daily Times, he had originally been under probation for another month after being charged with disorderly conduct related to an October 7 incident last fall.

He was also ordered to complete 100 hours of community service with his prior charge but has not yet finished any of that time.

Former LSU WR Byrd hospitalized after car accident

The Shreveport Times is reporting that Byrd, who just finished his last season at LSU and is considered to be a draft prospect for the upcoming NFL draft, was involved in an accident and is in intensive care at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Last season, he caught 37 passes for 513 yards and four touchdowns. During LSU’s BCS championship in 2007, he had 35 receptions for 621 yards and seven scores.

Former Arizona State coach Snyder passes away

The university released a statement saying that Snyder died at his Phoenix home. He was diagnosed with cancer last June.

Snyder coached the Sun Devils from 1992-2000, which included an 11-0 season in 1996 that was spoiled by a last-minute 20-17 loss to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.

Conference USA signs deal to compete in Hawaii Bowl

The game is usually a showcase for the Western Athletic Conference, and specifically the hometown Hawaii Warriors if the school is bowl eligible.

Until this year, the Pac-10′s seventh bowl-eligible school received the other bid to the contest, but that spot was voided after last season by mutual agreement after only five teams from the conference received bids to the postseason.

East-West Shrine Game moves to Orlando for 2010

The contest, which serves as college football’s premier all-star game, will be played at the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium on January 23. It was previously held in Houston from 2007-2009.

“The East-West Shrine Game has always fielded players among college football’s best,” the game’s executive director Jack Hart said. “With all 32 NFL teams represented by GMs, coaches and scouts during game week, our players have the terrific opportunity to showcase their talents and get their first glimpse of life in the NFL, just like on Sunday.” The East-West Shrine Game originally started in the San Francisco Bay area in 1925 and is the oldest college all-star game in the U.S., featuring the best athletes in the U.S. and Canada.
