Lions acquire WR Northcutt from Jags

The 31-year-old Northcutt, who spent the last two seasons with the Jaguars, caught 44 passes for 545 yards and two touchdowns in 14 games, including three starts, in 2008. He spent the previous seven seasons with Cleveland. For his career, the wideout has 364 grabs for 4,584 yards and 17 scores in 128 games (59 starts).

Alexander, 25, was selected in the second round (61st overall) by Detroit in the 2007 NFL Draft and started all 16 games as a rookie. He finished with two interceptions, as many sacks and 59 solo tackles that year, but tailed off in 2008, playing in only five games, starting one and recording six tackles.

Lions give C Raiola contract extension

Raiola was selected with the 50th overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft out of Nebraska and has started 108 of 124 games with the Lions.

Chiefs ink S Brown

The 5-foot-10 Brown spent the previous nine seasons with Chicago after the Bears took him 39th overall in the 2000 draft. He has recorded 629 tackles and 17 interceptions, four of which were returned for touchdowns, in 100 regular- season games.

The Nebraska product earned a trip to the Pro Bowl following the 2005 campaign.

Giants’ Boley undergoes surgery

The procedure was performed by team physician Dr. Bryan Kelly at the Hospital for Special Surgery, and a full recovery is expected in 8-10 weeks.

The 6-foot-3, 236-pound Boley, who signed with the G-Men as a free agent on February 28 after four years with the Atlanta Falcons, has recorded six sacks, six forced fumbles, five interceptions and four fumble recoveries in 64 games — 52 starts.

Carolina’s Peppers signs franchise tender

The second overall pick in the 2002 NFL Draft has made four Pro Bowl appearances over his seven-year career with Carolina, but in the offseason had expressed his desire to play elsewhere.

However, he signed the one-year tender which is expected to earn him $16.7 million for 2009.

Packers and WR Jennings agree to deal

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting that Jennings will be paid nearly $9 million per season under the deal, which would make him one of the highest paid receivers in the league.

Jennings, 25, established career-highs with 80 receptions and 1,292 yards last season and added nine touchdowns. The Pro Bowl alternate ranked sixth among NFL receivers in total yards last season and third at 16.2 yards per reception.

Chiefs to retire Derrick Thomas’ jersey

Thomas, who wore number 58 with the team, was the Chiefs’ fourth-overall selection in the 1989 draft out of the University of Alabama, and played all 11 of his pro seasons in Kansas City.

He is the 10th member of the Chiefs franchise to be so honored.

Northwestern’s Fitzgerald extended through 2015

Steelers ink OT Starks to four-year deal

Financial terms were not disclosed. The Steelers put the franchise tag on Starks back in February, which guaranteed he will be paid the average salary of the top five players at his position, or 120 percent of his 2008 salary. However,by signing the contract he no longer carries the franchise designation.

Starks, a Florida product, was originally selected by the Steelers in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft.

Steelers CB Bryant retires

The 32-year-old signed with the Steelers in November after being let go by New England on August 30. He appeared in two regular season games with Pittsburgh and had three tackles, but was inactive for the team’s three postseason games, including the Steelers’ win over Arizona in Super Bowl XLIII.

Bryant was originally selected by Jacksonville with the 26th overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft, after earning first-team All-SEC honors as a senior at Alabama.
