Hawaii suspends McMackin 30 days

McMackin used the comment while describing Notre Dame’s chant prior to last year’s Hawaii Bowl.

“I made a big mistake,” said McMackin. “I want to apologize to everyone that I offended with my remarks. I’m committed to do whatever I can to use this as a life lesson and to learn from my mistake. When we make mistakes we have to learn from it and make better people of ourselves.” McMackin said he spoke with Charlie Weis, the head coach at Notre Dame and apologized to him.

Seahawks release Wahle

The 32-year-old Wahle was selected by Green Bay in the second round in the 1998 supplemental draft. Wahle was chosen to play in the 2005 Pro Bowl. He started 10 games for the Seahawks in 2008 before being placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury and then was released on Friday after failing his physical.

The team also placed defensive back Marcus Trufant on the physically unable to perform list due to a sore back and signed veteran offensive lineman Cory Withrow.

Texans sign second-round pick Barwin

Barwin was the 46th overall selection out of Cincinnati, where he earned All- American honors as a senior in 2008.

He switched to the defensive side as a senior and led his team and the Big East in sacks with 12.

Lions sign three draft picks, including Pettigrew

The team’s second first-round pick and 20th overall, Pettigrew was signed to a five-year deal.

Considered to be one of the most complete tight ends of the draft, Pettigrew played for Oklahoma State, where he had 112 receptions for 1,450 yards and nine touchdowns.

Panthers sign second-round pick Brown

In just three seasons at Florida State, Brown ranked fifth on the school’s all-time list in sacks (23) and second in tackles for losses (46 1/2).

The 43rd overall selection — Carolina’s first pick of the draft — was runner-up for ACC Player of the Year in 2008, when he recorded 13 1/2 sacks and 21 1/2 tackles for a loss.

Jags sign Knighton

Knighton was the 72nd overall selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, and the Jaguars have now signed seven of their nine draft picks.

The Temple product played in 46 games — 34 starts — for the Owls and finished with 26 tackles for a loss, six sacks and four forced fumbles.

Financial terms were not released.

Freeman’s signing means the Bucs have signed each of their selections from the 2009 NFL Draft.

Redskins sign top pick Orakpo

Orakpo will join the team in camp on Friday, which marks his 23rd birthday.

The Texas product was the 13th overall pick in this year’s draft and was regarded as one of the top defensive ends in all of college football. He posted 23 career sacks in college, including 11 last season.

Packers sign first-rounder LB Clay Matthews

A second-team All-Pac-10 honoree as a senior, Matthews appeared in 50 games and started 10 for Southern California over a four-year collegiate career. He played in four consecutive Rose Bowls and was selected as the Trojans’ co- special teams player of the year in each of his final three seasons.

Matthews is the son of longtime NFL linebacker by the same name Clay Jr., who starred for Cleveland and Atlanta over 16 seasons. Clay Sr., Matthews’ grandfather, played in the NFL for the 49ers in the 1950s.

Falcons ink first-round pick DT Peria Jerry

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports it’s a five-year contract.

Chosen 24th overall, the consensus first-team All-SEC selection graduated from Ole Miss with 132 tackles, 11 1/2 sacks and one interception over four years with the Rebels.
