Chargers’ Tomlinson returns to practice

Tomlinson sprained the ankle and sat out the next two games, a home loss to Baltimore and a home victory over Miami.

He’s aiming to return to the field for Sunday night’s contest at Pittsburgh.

Lions re-sign DT Darby

Darby started 15 games for the Lions last season, recording 32 tackles and 1 1/2 sacks. The 33-year-old has nine years of NFL experience with 206 tackles and 13 1/2 sacks in 112 career games for Tampa Bay, Seattle and Detroit.

To make room on the roster, cornerback Marcus McCauley was released.

Bengals LB Maualuga, others miss practice

Maualuga suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee last Sunday, but head coach Marvin Lewis stated that the USC product will play this week when the Bengals travel to Cleveland. Unlike problems with the ACL which usually require surgery, the MCL most often heals on its own.

Running back Cedric Benson, who is grappling with his own knee troubles, also missed practice, as did defensive tackle Tank Johnson with a foot issue.

Washington’s Portis, Haynesworth sit out practice

Portis suffered a calf injury that kept him out of the final stages of Washington’s 19-14 defeat on Sunday. Head coach Jim Zorn indicated after the game that Portis was kicked in the calf. Portis came into the game already questionable dealing with soreness in his ankles.

Haynesworth is dealing with a strained glute muscle, according to Zorn. He had to be helped onto a cart by teammates and was taken into the locker room during the second quarter of Sunday’s game after sacking Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford. He was able to return in the second half.

Seahawks’ Hasselbeck, Jones likely out for Sunday

Both players did not practice on Wednesday in anticipation of Sunday’s contest at Indianapolis against the Colts, and head coach Jim Mora, Jr. confirmed it at his post-practice press conference.

Hasselback still can’t run or breathe deeply after suffering a fractured rib two weeks ago, while Jones is having enough pain in his surgically-repaired left knee to keep him off the field.

Bucs re-sign McCoy; sign Urrutia to practice squad

McCoy played the first two games of the season, primarily on special teams, but did start the season opener against Dallas after Geno Hayes was benched for a late arrival on the morning of the game.

He had been released on Sunday after the team added Urrutia to the active roster for some depth at the position.

Kolb, Briggs, Harvin capture NFC weekly honors

Kolb, in his second career start, captured the offensive honors after he threw for 327 yards and two touchdowns without an interception in the Eagles’ 34-14 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. He also added a rushing score, the first of his career.

Philadelphia’s second-round pick in the 2007 draft, Kolb became the first quarterback in NFL history to pass for 300 yards in each of his first two career starts. Playing in the absence of Donovan McNabb, who is injured, Kolb threw for 391 yards in a Week 2 loss to New Orleans.

Jones-Drew, Ayanbadejo, Trusnik earn AFC weekly honors

Jones-Drew captured the offensive honor after rushing for 119 yards and tying a career-high with three touchdowns in a 31-24 win over the Houston Texans. His 61-yard scoring run was the team’s longest play since December 23, 2007 and helped the Jaguars record a season-high 398 yards on offense.

It was Jones-Drew’s second career Player of the Week Award, having also captured the honor in Week 14 of 2006.

Chiefs sign Herron, Richardson

Herron played in 16 games, including three starts, with Minnesota over the last two seasons and totaled 17 tackles, with nine of them coming on special teams.

Richardson appeared in 10 games last season with New England and registered 12 tackles, including eight on special teams.

Mangini going with Anderson at QB for winless Browns

Mangini indicated Monday that a change at the position could be forthcoming in the wake of an ugly 34-3 loss to the Ravens this past weekend as Brady Quinn was benched in favor of Anderson to start the second half.

Quinn beat out Anderson in an open competition for the job during training camp and the preseason, although, the first-year head coach chose not to officially name Quinn the starter until he stepped onto the field to lead the first-team offense in Week 1.
