Iowa State holds off Minnesota in Insight Bowl

Ter’ran Benton recovered a fumble at the Cyclones’ 15 with under two minutes to play, as Iowa State (7-6) ran out the remainder of the clock to record a winning season in Paul Rhoads’ first year as the coach. It is the school’s first winning campaign since going 7-5 in 2005.

Austen Arnaud completed 19-of-26 passes for 216 yards and a score with two interceptions and ran for 77 yards and a touchdown in the win. Jake Williams caught six passes for 83 yards and a touchdown for the Cyclones.

Dobbs, Navy throttle Missouri in Texas Bowl

Dobbs made up for two lost fumbles with 166 yards on 31 carries, helping Navy (10-4) hold the ball for 23 more minutes thanks to a 387-64 advantage on the ground.

Missouri (8-5) came into the game holding opponents to just 96.4 rushing yards per game.

Jones uses Broyles to help Oklahoma down Stanford in Sun Bowl

Jones finished 30-of-51 passing with one interception, while Broyles was his go-to receiver, making 13 catches for 156 yards. DeMarco Murray ran for the eventual game-winning score in the third quarter for the Sooners (8-5), whose defense held on in the final frame to secure the victory.

Oklahoma had lost five of its last six bowl appearances, with that lone win coming in the 2005 Holiday Bowl against Oregon. Since then, the Sooners had lost back-to-back Fiesta Bowl appearances, as well as the BCS title game last season to Florida.

Broncos’ Marshall misses practice with injury

Marshall, whose status for Sunday’s game against the Chiefs has yet to be determined, leads the team with 101 catches for 1,120 yards and a career-high 10 touchdowns this season.

To reach the postseason, the Broncos need a win in the regular season finale in addition to some help in other games involving AFC contenders.

Air Force picks off Keenum, Houston in bowl rematch

Tim Jefferson managed the game well, completing 10-of-14 throws for 161 yards and also rushed for a score for Air Force (8-5), which got a measure of revenge from last year’s 34-28 loss to the Cougars in this same bowl.

Jonathan Warzeka returned a kickoff 100 yards for another TD for the Falcons, who won four of their last five games to close out the season. Anthony Wright had three interceptions to lead the Air Force defense.

Bills promote Brandon, name Nix GM

Brandon served as COO/general manager for the previous two years in Buffalo, which failed to make the playoffs for the 10th straight season in 2009.

Nix, 70, spent eight years as a Bills scout before joining the Chargers organization as director of player personnel (2001-02) and assistant general manager (2003-08).

Giants place RB Jacobs and CB Ross on IR

Jacobs is suffering from a knee injury that will require arthroscopic surgery next week.

He totaled a team-best 835 yards on 224 carries with five touchdowns and also caught 18 passes for 184 yards with a score.

Hokies and Vols lock horns in Chick-fil-A Bowl

Virginia Tech is hoping to clinch a 10-win season for the sixth consecutive year, and that would be a tremendous accomplishment to say the least. The team is 9-3 overall this season, including a 5-2 mark against ACC competition. The Hokies are just 8-14 all-time in bowl games, and head coach Frank Beamer is 7-9 in bowl games after winning last year?s Orange Bowl. Beamer’s team closed out the 2009 regular season with four consecutive double-digit victories, so expect a confident group of Hokies entering this bowl matchup.

Armed Forces Bowl pits Houston against Air Force, again

Last year, the Cougars secured a 34-28 win against Air Force in this event, now in its seventh year, marking the second straight year in which the academy had come up short in this particular postseason contest.

This season, UH was an offensive juggernaut, scoring no less than 29 points in any one game and averaging 43.9 ppg to rank second in the nation by mere fractions of a point behind Boise State. Four times the Cougars posted at least 50 points in a game, the high-water mark coming against the Rice Owls on November 28th in a lopsided 73-14 final in the last home game of the campaign. The victory was the second in a row and the seventh in eight games for Houston, but the team still had one more to go the first week of December.

Golden Gophers and Cyclones mix it up in Insight Bowl

The Gophers fell to Kansas last season, 42-21 in this bowl, and were also defeated by Texas Tech 44-41 in overtime back in 2006. Overall Minnesota is just 5-8 in bowl games and has dropped its last three postseason contests. The last time Minnesota captured a victory in a bowl game was in 2004 when the Gophers slipped past Alabama, 20-16, in the Music City Bowl.

2009 was an inconsistent season for Minnesota, which finished with a mere 6-6 mark on the year. The Gophers held on for a postseason berth despite dropping four of their last six matchups.
