Texas Bowl pits Navy against Missouri

The two teams are meeting for the third time and the first since the Tigers notched a 21-14 victory in the 1961 Orange Bowl. The only other encounter took place in 1948 and Missouri won that clash as well by a 35-14 score in Annapolis.

The Tigers weren’t expected to be all that competitive after losing some key players from a year ago, but they started and finished strong en route to an 8-4 record. Missouri, which opened the season 4-0, lost four of five games in the middle of the campaign before closing the regular season with three straight victories. This is the program’s fifth consecutive bowl game and 27th all-time. The Tigers are 12-14 all-time in bowl games.

Sooners tangle with Cardinal in Sun Bowl

Oklahoma is making its 43rd bowl appearance, and the program is 24-17-1 all- time in the postseason. Unfortunately, success in bowl games has been hard to come by in recent years. Last season, the club lost the national title game to Florida in a 24-14 final, the fifth loss in the last six bowl appearances for the Sooners. This year’s team has been a major disappointment, as it enters this clash sporting a 7-5 overall record. The hope is that a 27-0 victory over rival Oklahoma state in the regular-season finale will serve as a source of confidence heading into this clash with the Cardinal.

Lee, Cornhuskers plow over Arizona in Holiday Bowl

20 Nebraska recorded its first ever bowl shutout, a 33-0 defeat of No. 22 Arizona in the Holiday Bowl.

The Cornhuskers (10-4) dominated on both sides of the ball, limiting the Wildcats (8-5) to 109 total yards while piling up 399 yards of their own.

Texas Tech fires Leach

Leach was fired with cause prior to Wednesday’s hearing regarding his temporary restraining order request to lift his suspension for Saturday’s Alamo Bowl against Michigan State.

Bowling Green’s Barnes sets NCAA single-season record for catches

Barnes had 138 catches coming into Wednesday’s Humanitarian Bowl versus Idaho and needed five to break the record held by Manny Hazard, who made 142 grabs in 1989 for Houston.

Barnes hit the mark before the end of the first quarter on a seven-yard snag with just under two minutes remaining. He also had a 35-yard touchdown and totaled 111 yards on nine catches by halftime.

Bengals LB Maualuga’s season over, placed on IR

Maualuga suffered a broken ankle in Sunday’s win over Kansas City, an injury which will not allow him to return even if the Bengals advanced deep into the postseason.

He was injured on a cut block to the ankle late in the first quarter of the 17-10 victory, which clinched the AFC North title for the Bengals.

Giants RB Jacobs to have knee surgery next week

Jacobs has suffered through knee trouble the past few seasons and will get it scoped with the Giants out of the playoff hunt following last week’s 41-9 blowout loss to Carolina.

The fifth-year back rushed six times in that loss and finished with just one yard.

Cutler, Beason, Spurlock named NFC Players of the Week

Cutler won his first offensive award with the Bears and second in his career after throwing for 273 yards and four touchdowns with one interception in a 36-30 overtime win over the Vikings, which included his game-winning 39-yard TD toss to Devin Aromashodu.

The first-year Bears signal-caller connected on 20-of-35 passes and finished with a 108.4 passer rating.

Brady, Woodley, Smith tabbed AFC’s top performers for Week 16

Brady was nearly flawless, completing 23-of-26 passes for 267 yards and four touchdowns to help New England secure the AFC East crown for a sixth time in seven seasons with Sunday’s 35-7 victory over Jacksonville.

His 88.5 completion percentage set a Patriots single-game record while tossing at least four TD passes for the 12th time in his career. This was Brady’s 15th career Player of the Week award and second this season.

Bears place DL Idonije, CB Tillman on IR

Idonije played in all 15 games this season for the Bears, recording 20 tackles, 2 1/2 sacks and one forced fumble. He also blocked two extra point attempts.

Tillman was taken off on a stretcher Monday night against Minnesota with a rib injury after a collision with teammate Craig Steltz. He finished the season with 86 tackles, two interceptions and six forced fumbles in 15 starts.
