Lions sign third-round pick Spievey

Spievey was selected by the Lions in the third round (66th overall) of this year’s draft. The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder started every game that he played in (26) at Iowa, recording 124 tackles.

Detroit also inked defensive end Willie Young to a three-year deal. The North Carolina State product was taken in the seventh round of this year’s draft.

Report: Police reviewing video of Vick party

The Virginian-Pilot reported Quanis Phillips, a co-defendant of Vick’s in the infamous 2007 dogfighting case, was taken to a hospital early Friday morning following a shooting outside Guadalajara, the establishment hosting Vick and his guests.

While the Eagles and the NFL investigated the matter, Vick’s lawyer told the paper his client was not involved and had left the party before the shooting took place.

Penn State, Syracuse to meet at Meadowlands in 2013

The game will take place on August 31, 2013, and the schools are also close to finalizing an agreement to play a home-and-home series in 2020-21.

“We are thrilled about the opportunity to play Syracuse at the New Meadowlands Stadium to open the 2013 season,” Penn State director of athletics Tim Curley said.

Seahawks sign safety Ellison

Ellison was claimed off waived by the Seahawks on June 22 after he was let go by the Chargers.

He was then waived by Seattle two days later, but was then signed to a contract.

Report: Cincinnati RB Benson arrested in Austin

Several media outlets are reporting that Benson was booked at Travis County jail and released after posting bail.

The alleged incident took place on May 30 at Annie’s West bar on May 30 when Benson got into an altercation with another bar patron. He was escorted out of the bar and once outside he punched bar employee Bryan White in the face.

Steelers’ Colon, Scott to have surgery

Colon suffered a potentially season-ending torn Achilles Monday during a workout while Scott hurt his foot last week while working out at the University of Tennessee.

While Colon may miss the entire 2010 campaign due to the reported severity of his ailment, the team did not state whether Scott will be able to play this year or not.

Injured Giants S Jones to be transferred to NY hospital

Jones had been recuperating at LSU Public Hospital in New Orleans following an auto accident late last week in which he suffered broken bones in his left leg and ankle, requiring eight hours of surgery to improve the blood flow in his left foot.

“Chad had received outstanding medical care from the doctors and nurses in New Orleans since his accident. Bengals’ Henry had existing brain damage at time of death

Doctors at the Brain Injury Research Institute (BIRI) at West Virginia University revealed the findings Monday, saying Henry’s brain tissue was found to have the same kind of damage found previously in older, retired players who had histories of concussion.

The doctors point to the findings as the first evidence of the condition in an NFL player that has died while an active NFL player. Henry was known to have no prior history of concussions during his NFL or collegiate career at West Virginia.

Giants waive WR/KR Davis following failed physical

Davis was claimed off waivers by New York from the Cincinnati Bengals last Thursday.
