Steelers’ OL Colon injured

The injury occurred during a workout and is being further examined to determine the severity.

The 27-year-old Colon was originally selected by the Steelers in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL Draft.

Rams sign CB Murphy, WR Gilyard

Louis, MO (Sports Network) – The St. Louis Rams on Monday signed eight oftheir 11picks from the 2010 draft, including cornerback Jerome Murphy and wide receiver Mardy Gilyard.

Murphy recorded 202 tackles and eight interceptions in four seasons at South Florida, where he earned First-Team All-Big East honors in 2009. He was taken in the third round at No. 65.

Lions president Lewand arrested, apologizes

According to the Detroit Free Press, Lewand was arrested Friday night in Roscommon County, which is toward the northern end of Michigan. The paper reported he has been released, adding it is uncertain how the arrest will affect his role with the team.

“I am deeply sorry for my actions and take full responsibility for them,” Lewand said in a statement released by the team to the paper. “As a person in active recovery, I am committed to taking all necessary steps to insure nothing like this ever happens again.” Lewand was named team president in December 2008.

Giants safety Chad Jones has surgery following car accident

According to the team’s website, Jones suffered broken bones in his left leg and ankle in the crash and had surgery at the LSU Public Hospital in New Orleans.

Early Friday morning, Jones’ father told WWL radio in Louisiana that his son was injured in the wreck, but said that he was alert when paramedics took him to the hospital. Emergency personnel in New Orleans reported transporting a patient from the scene of the crash in guarded condition.

Eagles looking into shooting outside Vick’s birthday party

The Virginian-Pilot reported Quanis Phillips, a co-defendant of Vick’s in the infamous 2007 dogfighting case, was taken to a hospital early Friday morning following a shooting outside Guadalajara, the establishment hosting Vick and his guests.

“We are aware of the incident that occurred in Virginia early this morning and are in the process of gathering all of the facts. Until then, we will not have any comment on this matter,” the Eagles’ statement read.

Horn signs and retires with Saints

The 38-year-old Horn joined the Saints as a free agent in 2000 and racked up 7,622 receiving yards on 523 catches with a team-record 50 touchdowns. He is also the franchise’s all-time leader in 100-yard receiving games with 27, and is second in team history in receptions and yardage.

He is also the only Saints player to record more than 75 catches in five straight seasons, including a career and franchise-high 94 in 2000 and 2004.

USC appeals NCAA ruling

USC was given a two-year bowl ban, as well as a reduction of scholarships and a forfeiture of wins as the result of violations in the football, men’s basketball and women’s tennis programs.

While the school’s self-imposed sanctions to the men’s basketball and women’s tennis programs were sufficient, it asked for the football team’s postseason ban of two years to be reduced to one and the number of total scholarships lost to be reduced from 30 to 15.

According to WWL radio in Louisiana, Jones’ father said that his son was injured in the wreck, but said that he was alert when paramedics took him to the hospital. Emergency personnel in New Orleans reported transporting a patient from the scene of the crash in guarded condition.

The 6-foot-3, 218-pound Jones, a 2010 third-round pick who signed his rookie contract with the Giants on June 11, played in 40 games over three seasons at LSU, starting 19 times, including all 13 games as a junior in 2009.

Ravens bring in veteran CB Walt Harris

Harris missed the 2009 season while recovering from a torn ACL suffered in offseason workouts with San Francisco. He played three seasons with the 49ers after also spending time with Chicago, Indianapolis and Washington in his 13- year career.

The 35-year-old veteran was a Pro Bowl pick in 2006, his first season with San Francisco, after registering a career-high eight interceptions. He picked off three passes in 16 games during the 2008 campaign.

Giants get WR/KR Davis off waivers

Davis missed the entire 2009 season with a hamstring injury he suffered in the Hall of Fame game against Buffalo.

He played his previous two season with Tennessee and over 17 games he totaled seven catches for 69 yards and averaged 9.1 yards on 33 punt returns and 26.0 yards on six kickoff returns.
