Jaguars make it official with Alualu

Terms for the standout University of California defensive tackle were not disclosed, but the Florida Times-Union on Monday reported it to be a five-year pact worth $28 million with $17.5 million in guaranteed money.

Alualu was the third of five defensive tackles drafted in the first round, behind only Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy. He was the fourth defensive tackle chosen in the first round by the Jaguars and first since John Henderson in 2002.

Gaming: Go with underdogs in Big East play

In fact, not a single team has compiled a combined above-.500 record over the last three seasons, while the overall total stands at 35-48 (42%). West Virginia has been the biggest money-loser of the bunch with a 6-12 mark (33%).

On the bright side, the league has fared well in out-of-conference play with an 88-65-1 ATS record since the start of the ’06 season. Last year, the eight teams went 22-14 ATS (61%), including a 12-8 mark against the other five Football Bowl Subdivision conferences. Surprisingly, Louisville has the top record in the league over the last two years at 6-2.

Report: Favre set to retire

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the future Hall of Fame quarterback has informed Minnesota Vikings officials that he won’t return for a second season with the club.

Favre, who turns 41 on October 10, has one year left on his contract with the Vikings and it was thought that he would return some time during training camp.

Haynesworth skips conditioning test again

Haynesworth has yet to practice since training camp began last week because he has been unable to pass the test, which requires him to complete a series of running drills in an allotted amount of time. He failed the test on Thursday and Friday of last week, then skipped it on Saturday and Sunday because of knee soreness.

On Monday, Haynesworth began the drill but was unable to finish because of the knee issue.

Delany: Big Ten expects title game in 2011

The Big Ten was among the many conferences that recently helped change the landscape of collegiate athletics, adding perennial power Nebraska to the fold back in June, the first new member since Penn State joined 20 years ago. The move comes into effect on July 1, 2011.

The addition has the conference sporting 12 teams, causing a change in scheduling and the inevitability of a long sought-after championship game, though a location for that contest has yet to be determined.

Colts sign first-rounder Hughes

No terms of the deal were disclosed but the Indianapolis Star is reporting that it is a five-year deal for Hughes, who was the 31st overall selection in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Hughes signed his contract in time to join the team for its afternoon practice Monday, the first day of official workouts for the Colts.

Bengals ink top pick Gresham

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, it is a five-year deal worth $15.85 million, with $9.6 million guaranteed. He is expected to join the Bengals for their afternoon practice on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-5, 261-pound Gresham did not play last season after suffering a knee injury, but that did not dissuade the Bengals from using the 21st overall selection in the 2010 NFL Draft on him.

Vanderbilt’s Caldwell has interim tag removed

The Tennessean said that Vanderbilt Vice Chancellor David Williams II announced the move Monday at the Rotary Club of Nashville’s meeting, where Caldwell was a guest speaker.

Caldwell was named interim head coach when Bobby Johnson abruptly announced his retirement July 14.

Cardinals agree to terms with first-round pick Williams

Williams, the 26th overall selection, started all 13 of Tennessee’s games at defensive end in 2009 as a senior. He earned first-team All-SEC honors after recording a career-high 70 tackles (nine for loss), 2 1/2 sacks and nine quarterback pressures.

In 45 games — 32 starts — during his collegiate career, Williams posted 160 tackles (25 for loss) and seven sacks.
